WHO WE ARE?

IS THIS WHO WE ARE?

This essay was prompted by Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: a history of violence and humanity,
his assertion that violence is less today.
His view to me is very narrow.

We live in a very violent world.  The multitudes dying from violence are not the only violence we are visiting on the earth. We have a callous blindness to the fate of others.  The living world around us experiences the after-effect of our arrogance, our hubris and our disconnection.  Tensions, threats, shadows of violence fill the air.  None are immune.

Connections globally via electronics and satellites underline the comparmentalized awareness felt by many of us, regardless of our economic circumstance.

Depleted Uranium - NATO's Dark Secret

The US and NATO militaries began using bullets made of DU in the 1991 Gulf War and have been using it in every major armed conflict since that time. It is used because it is extremely dense (1.6 times as dense as lead) which makes it ideal for piercing heavy armor. The U.S. used 640,000 pounds of DU ammunition just in the first gulf war alone. In the 2003 invasion they used an estimated 4,000,000 pounds.

More than 51 million fellow human beings were forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict and human rights abuse. It is the highest number recorded since the refugee crisis following World War II.

The Bagger 293 is a giant bucket-wheel excavator built in Germany in 1995. It requires a crew of five to operate and can move over 8.5 million cubic feet of earth per day. The Bagger 293 uses a large 70-foot rotating wheel at the end of a long arm. This wheel has a series of buckets attached, and as the wheel rotates the buckets pick up the earth and dump it onto a conveyor belt. The conveyor belts will transport the earth to other vehicles for removal to the dumping site.

  3. One of, if not the most compelling of your posts. Yes, we are all complicit. The extent and willingness to acknowledge is all that differs.

  4. On more thing- While he raises interesting observations on the human condition, in the end, I am not convinced by Pinker, and think he is unable to even see the personal biases he is so quick to see in others.

  5. Albert Einstein? Would that be the same Albert Einstein whose work led to the Atomic Bomb?
